Support the African Women’s Development Fund

Do you want to make a difference in the lives of women and girls in Africa? Do you believe that the world will be a better place when women are empowered with skills and resources?

If you do, support AWDF with your time, talents and treasure. On this page you will find tips and suggestions on how to fundraise for AWDF.

Host an AWDF Movie Night

As part of its popular culture project AWDF seeks to engage the entertainment industry in various parts of Africa to produce alternative images and messages about African women. In furtherance of this objective AWDF has supported the repackaging of The White Handkerchief and The Narrow Path

Host an “AWDF Movie Night” and watch The White Handkerchief or The Narrow Path. Hold a discussion on themes discussed and invite your guests to support AWDF with a cash donation.

Contact the Fundraising & Communications department via if you would wish to host a movie night as a fundraiser for AWDF.

Hold a House Party

Holding a house party is a fun way of raising money for AWDF and an opportunity to let your imagination run wild. You can host different types of house parties as a fundraiser for AWDF. Some fun suggestions include:

  • A “Pan-African Party” – Cook food from different regions of Africa for your guests or ask your guests to bring food from diverse African countries for a potluck dinner. Enjoy the diverse tastes of Africa whilst raising money to support the work of AWDF.

  • A Themed Party – Themes are a great way to create excitement around a party and your theme can be anything you want it to be. Host a 70s party, a girls night in, a movie star night…the important thing is that guests are motivated to stick to your theme and have fun whilst donating to a good cause.

  • A Virtual Party – In the current global village your party can even be a virtual one. Invite your friends around the world to join you on a video or chat conference party. You and your friends will need access to a laptop/computer. You can make use of tools such as webcams, microphones and headphones for voice chat, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Google’s Gmail video chat and Skype. Ask your friends to login to the awdf website where they can donate online

Form a Donor Circle

Invite friends and acquaintances to join you in forming a donor circle to raise money for AWDF. Your donor circle can decide which area of AWDF’s work you want to support. You can form a donor circle to support any of our thematic areas or AWDF’s endowment campaign.

AWDF’s Book Club night

We love reading at AWDF and so do many of you. Many African women writers in their literature address many of the social challenges facing women in Africa. Invite your friends to read a book by an African woman writer and ask them to come round for a discussion. Chat to your friends about how AWDF supports African women and ask them to support our work. Some of our favourite African authors include Ama Ata Aidoo, Pregs Govender and Abena Busia.
